A Truly Open Mind

“It is impossible to begin to learn that which one thinks one already knows” -Epictetus

Life is constantly sharing lessons if we are open to them. The problem is often we are not open to them. As we live, we acquire a lens through which we see the world. Then, we have a choice when we are presented with something that conflicts with that lens. Do we take the lesson? Or do we dismiss it because it contradicts what we already “know”? Do we live with a truly open mind? Or a mind that is open only to things that affirm our present worldview? Learning, truly learning, requires the ability to question and update our present knowledge. And as Socrates said, wisdom is understanding how little we actually know. So today, and every day, inform your opinions by learning, don’t inform your learning of your marvelous opinions.
