“No matter what anyone says or does, my task is to be good.” – Marcus Aurelius
Our only obligation is to do the right thing. To align ourselves with the good. Our purpose as humans is to act with virtue just as car’s purpose is to transport us or a house’s purpose is to protect us from the weather. A car that doesn’t move is considered bad because it can’t meet its purpose. A house with no roof doesn’t protect us from the weather and therefore is not a good house. Similarly, a human that doesn’t act with virtue doesn’t fulfill their purpose. There are plenty of opportunities to get diverted from the good. However, there is also nothing more satisfying than the victory of acting in accordance with the good. Take up this task, as best you can, regardless of potential diversions. It will be worth it.
