“Meditate often on the interconnectedness and mutual interdependence of all things in the universe.” – Marcus Aurelius
The Stoics often emphasized the small and ephemeral nature of human life to instill humility. However, they also realized the importance of everything playing their role. There are hundreds of tiny parts working together to make a car run. The fact that we are small and temporary doesn’t mean we are unimportant. Each of us playing our role in the universe as we should, with virtue is an important piece of making the universe as it should be. Would we say that a single rivet that holds on the wing of an airplane isn’t important because it’s small and there are other rivets alongside it? Of course not, we would want that rivet to do its part because they all have to work. So it is the case with us. We are small, but our virtuous actions are important.
