What makes a great life?
What makes a great day?
I have wasted a lot of time in my life. I have spent a lot of time worrying about what has passed and what comes next. Not to say that we should never plan for the future or reflect on the past. But that isn’t where life is happening. It’s going on right now, right in front of you. You’ll have plenty of time to think about that next job, the next house, the next vacation when they get here. But right now, you’re here. You’re not where you’re going to be. You’re not where you were. You’re right here, right now. But you’ll never be here and now again. You can’t get this back. As Marcus Aurelius said, you never step in the same river twice. Once this moment is gone, there is no getting it back. You’ll never have this exact time with your parents again. You’ll never have this time with your kids or your friends. Savor it all. You can’t change everything you’ve already done. You can’t change everything you’re going to do. But at this moment, you can act as you should. And that’s what a good life is, living every moment fully, as best as you can.
Of course, that is easier said than done.
